GEL

1.1 kg home-compostable bag

A real gel, set in your own flask. You choose how thick.

Maltodextrin and fructose at 2:1, with pectin and calcium to set it into a genuine gel rather than a syrup, and a base load of electrolytes. Shake it with hot water, pour it into your soft flask and chill it overnight. How thick is up to you: a little more water or a little less.

ALL-DAY

1.1 kg bag

Real calories you can drink while still moving.

Carbohydrate, protein and fat in one drink mix, for big days at an easy, all-day pace. Maltodextrin and sucrose for fuel, whey protein and MCT oil powder so it is more than sugar, and cocoa for a light chocolate-milk taste instead of sweet citrus. Mix it to whatever strength suits your bottle and your day.

02 The method

Weigh. Mix. Carry.

01

Weigh

A kitchen scale and a bag. You decide the dose, not a wrapper. 200 g for a flask of GEL, whatever your bottle holds of ALL-DAY for the middle of the day.

02

Mix

Hot water and a hard shake for GEL, then overnight in the fridge while it sets. Cold water and a shake for ALL-DAY. Thicker or thinner is a choice you make, not one made for you.

03

Carry

One flask instead of eight sachets. One bag in the pack instead of a week of wrappers. Refill from the bag at the car, the drop bag or the hut.

Self-supported is an ethos. It means planning your own route, carrying your own gear, setting your own pace, preparing your own fuel. Powtrek makes that easier, with a simple method that puts you in control of your fuelling.

03 What a bag replaces

Forty gel wrappers vs one bulk bag.

A gel sachet is a plastic and aluminium laminate. New Zealand's soft plastics scheme does not accept it. Every one you buy is landfill, and the carbohydrate inside it costs about three times what the same carbohydrate costs in a POWTREK GEL bag.

How it is worked out. Hours times grams times 52 weeks gives the carbohydrate you fuel with in a year. Sachet gels are costed at $19.25 per 100 g of carbohydrate, the average of eleven brands at New Zealand shelf prices. GEL is costed at $65 for a 1.1 kg bag carrying about 1,000 g of carbohydrate. Shelf prices move; treat the result as a fair estimate, not a quote.

04 What is in the bag

The ratio is on the label.

Six ingredients in GEL. Maltodextrin and fructose in a stated ratio, pectin and calcium lactate to set it into a real gel, electrolytes and flavour. No proprietary blend, no ingredient you cannot say. One ratio, tuned for how most people actually fuel.

Maltodextrin to fructose
2:1
Optimised for around 90 g of carbohydrate an hour.

05 Where it comes from

Tested where it counts.

POWTREK is made by an engineer who spends his weekends crossing the Southern Alps. Every recipe is carried over real passes on real days before it goes in a bag.
